Overview

¡Hola Barcelona! is a browser game built out of my own experience of living in Barcelona. You play as Yemmy taking the long way home across three stops, and each level draws on a different part of that experience.

It is vibe coded — no engine, no framework, no build step. The whole game is a single self-contained HTML file, with the pixel art drawn straight onto a canvas and the handheld console around it built in CSS.

Three stops home

Eixample — balconies and pickpockets.

Barceloneta — sand, gulls and jellyfish.

Metro L5 — commuters and pigeons.

Three stops and then home. Coins along the street, three lives, and a different hazard waiting on each one.

Making it

Every sprite, the parallax skyline, the HUD and the travel card are drawn frame by frame onto one canvas element. Nothing is loaded from anywhere else, so the game starts instantly and will still run exactly the same years from now.

The console shell is pure CSS — the hinges, the buttons, the little green power light. It scales itself to whatever screen it lands on.
